Despite the name, Virginia Beach is more than just a beach, a summer destination. Between mild weather, smaller crowds and various outdoor activities, you will understand why there is no off-season here. This winter, head to the coast and explore Virginia Beach from a new perspective.

Walking, biking, horseback riding-no matter how you like to travel, there are miles of beaches, forests and boardwalks to explore.

In First Landing State Park, hike through seven different ecosystems, including a 1.25-mile waterfront, where you can stop to admire the dunes and tidal marshes. Another 19 miles of interpretive hiking trails meander through protected habitats, including marine forest communities, one of the most endangered habitat types in the world. The fairly flat path can be used by the whole family, including your four-legged friends. Let the fun last the night when you settle down at one of the 200 campgrounds near the beach. Set up a tent, ride an RV, or book a country cottage with running water, electricity, and heating.

If you want to take a more adventurous walk, you can explore one of the last undeveloped areas on the east coast at the Back Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Winter is the best time for wildlife lovers to visit, because various wild birds will go to Virginia Beach for food and rest. The winter wild bird trail in the refuge is an excellent way to get first-hand information under the guidance of professional birdwatchers. Give your legs a break, jump on the tram ride, and keep an eye out for bobcats, foxes, deer, coyotes and other wild animals.

You can extend your mileage when you go to Cape Forth State Park. This one-mile-wide barrier between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean provides a pristine beachfront campground. In winter, the fake corner can only be reached by hiking, biking, boating, or via the tram service of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, so please be prepared to bring all your supplies. These natural campgrounds and pristine beaches provide a quiet and secluded holiday.

Without the humidity that summer brings, cycling through the many scenic views of Virginia Beach is one of the best ways to see the sights. The three-mile Virginia Beach Boardwalk was built for cyclists and has separate bike and walking paths. Break the classic beach cruiser, take up the challenge with two people, or rent a four-wheeled Surrey bike, the whole family work together as a team and go all out.

When you ride a fat-tired bicycle across an inaccessible beach, put your wheels on the water's edge. From the waterfront to the Chesapeake Bay, you will find that the wide tires of these bicycles make it as easy as pedaling on a sidewalk to cross wet sand. Rent your car from Surf and Adventure Company or Ocean Rentals LTD and explore a day in true local fashion.

Looking for real excitement? There is nothing more wonderful than trotting to the beach on horseback, because the wind messes up your hair and the waves beat the shore. To the beaches of the waterfront area, Virginia Beach Horseback Riding offers guided rides along the water’s edge.

Located at the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, there is no shortage of water sports activities. No matter what time of the year, whether you prefer salt water or fresh water, these waterways provide abundant fishing opportunities.

Norfolk Canyon is located near the coast of Virginia Beach, 115 fathoms deep, and is home to large fish such as longmouth, yellowfin tuna, cobia, and wahoo. Chesapeake Bay is another hot spot for anglers. It is the largest natural estuary in the United States and is home to 348 species of finfish. Between 70% and 90% of the world's rockfish live in the bay, which makes Virginia Beach an ideal place to host the annual Mid-Atlantic Rockfish gun battle every winter.

Hop on a charter plane from Rudee Inlet and let the crew take you to the heart of the action. You can also kayak or canoe at several locations in the area, including Dozier Bridge, Hutton Circle, Borderneck Launch and Owl Creek Boat Ramp. Many local outdoor vendors, such as River Outfitters and Ocean Rentals LTD, will provide rental services during your stay in the area. For more options, consider fishing from the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier on the waterfront, the Isles Pier at Sandbridge, or the Seagull Pier at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Although it may not be suitable for everyone, the powerful Nor'Easters can push some fairly large waves off the coast and bring some epic winter waves. Although the temperature of the ocean and air is not as cold as in the north, thick wetsuits and neoprene armor will help when it is a bit fast on the waves.

When you finish exploring outdoors, warm up indoors, eat something to recharge your energy, and relax with a refreshing beer. Hot tuna is a must visit when you enjoy the freshest seafood and live music in town. If you want to treat yourself, you can head to the Mermaid Winery to enjoy a delicious main course and wine tasting.

From the juicy IPA filled with hops to the complex sour taste of barrels, everyone who visits can taste beer. Drink along the Virginia Beach Beer Trail, from the Chesapeake Bay District to 12 local breweries on the Oceanfront. For something more intense, the two wineries in town provide a unique experience. From a hotel of Tarnished Truth Distilling Company with a 20-foot vodka column with a 500-gallon mixed tank still system, to Chesapeake Bay Distillery, an ancient craft spiritual paradise transformed from a surf shop , You will not want to miss these joys.

While everyone else is heading to the mountains, discover the other side of Virginia Beach this winter.
