2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo First Drive Review: Unconventional Wisdom-Roadshow

Taycan GTS has introduced an excellent new variant of the station wagon, which is definitely the way to go.

If you drive from Los Angeles to the Willow Springs International Speedway, you basically have two options. Google Maps will tell you to drive hard on Highway 5, and then choose Highway 14, which is effective but tedious. Do yourself a favor and follow the scenic route through the Angeles National Forest. Yes, it will take longer, but you can drive on some of the best scenic roads in Southern California. In order to have fun, what is more than half an hour?

All of this reminds me of the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo-how convenient-I am driving from Los Angeles to Willow Springs. For such driving, it may not be the first Porsche, or even the first electric car you think of, but there is a lot to say about making unconventional choices. This car, this road... It's amazing.

In any case, Porsche will only provide Taycan Sport Turismo with GTS trim in the United States. I heard that other countries/regions will get additional ST variants, but they have not been confirmed for consumption in the United States. why? Porsche does not want too much overlap with other Taycan variants of wagons, which are slightly more like SUVs and Cross Turismo. This is why—you guessed it—Porsche does not offer Cross Turismo in the GTS specification.

There are only a few differences between the Turismo twins. The ride height of the Cross Turismo is increased by 0.8 inches, and the Sport Turismo has the same posture as the Taycan sedan. Sport Turismo also ditched the Cross Turismo body cladding, and got a slightly different look from the GTS Sport Design exterior, which is complemented by 20 or 21-inch wheels of your choice.

Like Cross Turismo, all American-spec Sport Turismo will be equipped with a panoramic sunroof as standard. Hey, good news, Porsche has added a fast-working electrochromic tint to the huge glass panel of the station wagon, which can fully block the sun on bright days. You can even darken it halfway to get a cool translucent look. With fingers crossed, Porsche will bring this technology to other products in the Taycan series as soon as possible.

Race-Tex suede leather is used throughout GTS's interior.

Except for the roof, the interior of Turismos is the same. Sport is equipped with standard GTS products such as Race-Tex suede, upgraded stereo speakers and 18-way power seats. In addition to wired and wireless Apple CarPlay, the updated Porsche communication management technology for this model will eventually include wired Android Auto. Just like Cross Turismo, Sport Turismo has 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. If you lay them flat, you can expand to 42.8 cubic feet. Very easy to use

The battery in the GTS is the same as that in the Taycan 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S: a 93.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers the electric motors mounted on each axle. The maximum output power achieved through launch control is 590 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque. Since the Sport Turismo and GTS sedan weighed only 75 pounds, Porsche quoted the same 3.5 seconds 0 to 60 mph time for both cars.

My Carmine Red Sport Turismo is equipped with Porsche's dynamic chassis control adaptive shock absorber and rear axle steering system-these performance options should indeed become standard as part of the GTS package. At least GTS processing includes essentials such as self-leveling air suspension, torque vectoring technology and Porsche's ubiquitous Sport Chrono upgrade, which can unlock Sport Plus driving mode, start control, and more.

It is a wise judgment to choose to drive the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo on the better of the two routes from LA to Willow. (Why Willow Springs? That's where I drove the Taycan GTS sedan.) In the canyon separating Los Angeles from Palmdale, GTS is absolutely brisk. The fast, communicative steering allows me to dive into corners with confidence, and the standard adaptive air suspension keeps Sport Turismo squatting down during sharp turns. The instant electric torque of the power system is still an addictive source of endorphins.

High-speed hijinks are not the only trick on the sleeves of Sport Turismo. If you do choose to commute on a boring highway, you will get a quiet cabin and a luxurious highway trip. There is still no powerful lift-off regenerative braking in Taycan, which is a pity for single-pedal driving enthusiasts like me. Oh, and the GTS has Porsche’s Electric Sport Sound audio accompaniment. If you like futuristic audio role-playing games, you can turn it up, or if you... don’t like it, turn it off.

How much is the heat cost of electric vehicles? US$134,650, including US$1,350 for the destination, is obviously a lot of money, but not inappropriate for something so well-built and pleasant. The GTS Sport Turismo is more practical than the Taycan sedan, and it only costs $1,900 more, which is a breeze for me. Why go for traditional things? Sport Turismo is a more interesting choice.
