Porsche has introduced a new 3D printed bucket seat, some of which can be adjusted according to the requirements of individual drivers during the construction process.
The seat is an improvement of the existing Porsche seat design, such as the optional seat in some 911 and 718 (Boxster and Cayman) models, but the innovation lies in the sandwich structure of the seat and backrest.
Between the cushions of the driver's shell is a standard polypropylene base layer. However, sandwiched in it is a breathable comfort layer made of polyurethane-based lattices using a 3D printer.
This layer can be assigned to three hardness levels-soft, medium and hard-depending on the buyer's preference. The aerated structure also allows a certain degree of passive climate control.
The seat uses Race-Tex cushion, which is a non-slip material, cut out two parts to expose the lattice layer below. These parts can choose a series of Porsche colors, including Guards red, black and racing yellow, to match the exterior body or just provide colorful interior decoration.
The design of the seat is about 8% lighter than the existing device and was developed based on feedback received from the Nürburgring track days.
Porsche test driver Lars Kern said: "During the initial test drive, I was impressed with the ergonomics-the lower seat position and improved thigh support are similar to racing seats. Passive ventilation is also impressive. "
These seats are currently sold as additional accessories in the aftermarket through the Porsche Performance Parts Store, but from February next year, they will become an option for the new 911 and 718 models.
The new seats can be retrofitted to vehicles that have been fitted with full bucket seats, including the last generations of 911 and 718-internally called 992 and 981, respectively. Some models can even accommodate both driver and passenger side versions of the new seats.
It appeared in prototype form for the first time last year, and a version of the new bucket seat was also seen on the Porsche Mission R racing concept car that was unveiled at the IAA Mobile Show in Munich earlier this year, designed to show the future mid-term future of the customer's car in the eyes of Porsche Sports.
The company said that it is not only considering new seats, but also 3D printed bucket seats that fit the contours of individual customers.
However, before that, the latest 3D printed bucket seats started at £2,264.
