ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Two people died after a crash on Okeechobee Road west of Fort Pierce on Thursday afternoon.

Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened about noon when a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on Okeechobee Road hit a red Ford Ranger pickup traveling north on West Midway Road, near the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds.

According to an FHP report, the pickup, driven by Gary Walter Gerber, 44, of Okeechobee, failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign as it tried to turn left onto Okeechobee Road. The tractor-trailer, driven by Javier Gomez, 53, of Okeechobee, then crashed into the pickup.

The pickup overturned on the grass median, the report states. The tractor-trailer also overturned on its right side and came to a rest in the median, where the trailer separated from the cab.

Gerber and his passenger, Tammy Lynn Radford, 49, of Okeechobee, died at the scene, FHP said. Gomez was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Everyone was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

The St. Lucie County Fire District said all traffic was closed near the intersection after the crash. FHP spokesman Lt. Al Feola said all lanes were open again by 4:30 p.m.
